Readings on diversity with with an online focus. This should turn into an annotated bibliography with proper references ... for now, I just cut and paste from other sources in different formats, and arranged them in roughly-chronological order. Additional links appreciated! The list currently is weighted towards gender issues and so we're especially looking for complementary links in other dimensions.

JonPincus joint #p2/#fem2 twittercasts and tweetings 1 May 15 2009, 10:39 PM EDT by Hwaisbren

the idea seems a natural follow-on to the discussions of sexism and other issues we've had on Twitter and in our conference call: work together on a #fem2 Twittercast and #p2 Tweeting both to explore these issues in more detail and to start getting progressive guys to step forward more.

I see at least three potential goals for collaboration here:

1) improve awareness of gender-and-power issues and intersectional issues in online communication

2) get male progressives to start putting their muscle behind a couple of causes that are usually described as "women's issues", one chosen from a feminist perspective (#fairpay perhaps?) and one explicitly from a woman of color perspective.

3) more and deeper connections between people in the different communities, and more good information and conversation on all three hashtags

GloPan of #fem2 suggested that their Sunday Twittercast on Father's Day could be a good time to kick this off.

Thoughts about the overall idea, goals, format, specific topics, anything else?

Please discuss!

jon

Dinkyshop African American Women are 0.0023% of All US Architects 1 May 14 2009, 6:03 PM EDT by JonPincus

African Americans are about 1.6% of all US Licensed Architects. That number hasn't much improved in 16 years. In 1992, AAs were about 1.2% of all US Architects. Non female and non-AA architects over at the Architecture Record Magazine website forum seem to think meritocracy is gender, culture, race neutral.
Check out the thread from Architectural Record Magazine , then look at the statistics for African American Architects in the USA. There are about 101k licensed architects in the USA, according to ncarb.org, the organization that regulates architectural licensure in the USA. About 0.0023% of all architects in the USA are African American women. If that isn't invisible, I don't know what is.
The idea of relinquishing the design & planning of the built environment to people who know substantially less about your gender, culture and life, challenges, is a recipe for chaos (if not extinction), in my opinion. Community, house/home is central to each culture, family, tribe. We already know that poor planning and bad design can create social climates that are not conducive to community, healthy families.

Many of the posts on the AR site say AA women aren't achieving in architecture because (by implication) they must not merit advancement, must not be talented. Really?

Please look at the article on the Architectural Record site and comment here.
