Time for action. Here's our planning for EFCA.

The best ways to follow EFCA on Twitter are the #efca channel on Tweetleft or Twittersearch and @EFCANow
on Twitter

Update, May 20: check out our new EFCA Resources page!

Situation and Strategy

Sarah Jaffe's The EFCA: Truth and Fiction gives the background on the biggest organized labor battle since 1947. Can #p2 help the pro-labor coalition find a 60th vote in the Senate?

Tactics

1. Tweet links, stories, comments. Make sure to include the #EFCA tag as well as #p2!

2. Reteweet EFCA-related stories was you see them. Keep the #EFCA tag, and try to include a mix of other hashtags as well (#p2, #topprog, #rebelleft, #union, ...)

3. provide resources page for EFCA supporters, focusing on actions and key twitter accounts

Suggestions for hashtag use

The source or EFCA tweets should use two hashtags at most. Subsequent tweets can include additional hashtags like #rebelleft etc. I am not suggesting this to elevate one tag over the other, but want to urge us all to twitter wisely. Too many hashtags = annoyance to many people on twitter and you will eventually lose followers.

The #p2 hastag was intended to be used as a bridge to other tags so that those using those tags pick up related tweets. It's appearance should signal to others that they can retweet it to their communities (#topprog, #rebelleft, #fem2, #woc, etc)--like a communication pyramid. If we continue to include so many hashtags in every tweet, I fear it will end up diluting the message and mitigating the effectiveness of our efforts on Twitter.

For example:
  • the original tweet includes #EFCA and #p2
  • different people retweet it to #rebelleft, #topprog, #pxfridays, ... -- keeping the #efca hashtag (and should they also keep #p2?)

JonPincus Brainstorming: how can #p2 help with EFCA? 2 May 4 2009, 4:18 PM EDT by Hwaisbren
Thread started: May 4 2009, 3:42 PM EDT  Watch
One obvious way #p2 can help with EFCA is to publicize good information about the relvevant twitter hashtags and accounts. If there's already a good resource page on this available, let's get the word out. If not, let's start creating one.

What else can we do?

It's a brainstorming thread, so please suggest anything you think is likely to be helpful, even if it's wacky or not completely fleshed out. And please try to build on others' ideas rather than tearing them down.

Please discuss!

Hwaisbren Connection to on the ground action 2 May 4 2009, 4:04 PM EDT by Hwaisbren

There is no greater advocate for engagement with the pubic sphere as activism as I follow Martin Luther King's dictum that "we must match actions with words" in our efforts to Break Silence. That said, so far I see EFCA #p2 efforts as focusing mostly on the verbal aspect with examples of lobbying politicians, outreach to journalists, engagement with peoples' press conference efforts, etc.

Those are all incredibly important endeavors, but I also think we need to have a focus of connecting with on the ground activism. Mainstream media does not cover such actions, yet the "progressive batsignal" is quite capable of shining a light on these events. That will have the dual effect of providing more motivation to the participants as they receive the credit they deserve while also spreading the word about what they are doing to pundits (who can further amplify their work) as well as other potential activists as well!
