Hey #p2s,
our pals at Shantyworld.com (aka ShantyMinister on Twitter) has started a Flickr group that is posting PUBLIC OPTION Graphics. THe idea is to use the Graphics similarly to how progressives used signs for the 2008 Election. Please print them out, laminate them, display in windows (house car), Use as Bumper stickers, etc. Graphics are free to download. Flicker Group is called "Health Care reform Graphics - at http://ow.ly/ko2f and http://www.flickr.com/groups/hcr09/ Thanks. Please spread the word.

I don't want to get caught up in being the "teacher" for other progressives on how to be a progressive. Cn3matic made the point that each of us is in our own development track and we should honor that. Being too prescriptive doesnt come off right--implies moral authority. None of us is perfect so individuals should note it how and when they feel comfortable.

The idea and name of the #sexistmuch tag came up in our May 14 Tweeting. It's pretty simple: if you see a tweet to #p2 that you consider sexist, let people know about it by flagging it with the #sexistmuch tag.
There are several reasons for this: * Others can look at the tweet and draw their own conclusions about whether they think it's sexist -- and discuss, when there are disagreements. * Over time, this will give us a catalog of examples and help us discover better ways for combatting the problem. Here's how a tweet could look: #sexistmuch http://tinyurl/example explanation of why i think it's sexist @name #p2 - including a URL rather than excerpting the tweet means that the sexist remarks aren't repeated - including the tweeter's name communicates the feedback to them does it make sense to include the #p2 hashtag? this sends the signal to others on #p2 that it's a place where sexism is challenged. it's also likely to lead to ongong debates about sexism on #p2; a lot of people are tired of seeing these, but then again we still haven't talked through the issues. thoughts on this? jon

The easiest way to follow #p2 is via Tweetleft ( http://tweetleft.com/ ) or directly through twitter search using the "raw" #p2 stream. There are a lot of other options though, for example
- customizing searches. for example, here's how i ignore everything cross-posted to tcot: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23p2+-tcot ... - alternate web interfaces. here's how i use Twazzup to browse #p2 while ignoring and repeated requests to buy a shirt (as well as posts about tcot or gop): http://is.gd/BI3c - Twitter clients, like tweetdick, tweetgrid, etc. most clients allow you to filter out posts from individivual users or keywards How do you like to follow #p2? jon |

I am an outsider candidate for CA-10 with a strong volunteer base. We live on buzz, national volunteers, and $. I believe having P2 helping would be a great asset to my campaign for progressive change in the San Francisco East Bay. I support EFCA and labor, equal federal civil rights for all (opposed Prop. 8), an end to the drug war, and public financing for all offices. I am also a reform advocate under the auspices of the Gov 2.0 movement. | JonPincus | Shifting discussions with and about conservatives to #bipart | Discussion Forum | 3 | May 15 2009, 11:00 PM EDT by Hwaisbren | ||||

Roughly half of the conversation on #p2 is discussions with and about conservatives and/or cross-posted to conservative hashtags. ( http://is.gd/zdsa is a Twitter search that picks up a lot of this.) While there's a chunk of flaming and trolling in both directions, it's very good stuff over all. Rather than being on #p2, though, @martinschecter and I have been discussing whether it might make sense to try to move this to #bipart.
To be clear, I'm not saying "don't tweet about or with conservatives on #p2". It's more along the lines of "if the main purpose of your tweet is to debate or discuss something with conservatives, or if the main topic is about conservatives, think about sending it to #bipart instead". Here are some examples of the kind of thing i'm thinking of: @marcorubio responds via twitter to NRSC's endorsement of Crist's Florida Senate bid http://bit.ly/mUjET Kristol thinks #GOP should step up Obama attacks. Listen to The Man Who Is Always Wrong, please! http://tinyurl.com/phwtg9 Yikes: 50% of AZ GOP say McCain is out of touch http://is.gd/zbuL [to a conservative] Accusing @AProgressive of assassinating constitutional rights IS attacking his patriotism. Be honest and own up to that. They're all valuable tweets ... and seem to fit better with #bipart's mission than #p2's. Thoughts? jon

At last tweeting we agreed that one of #p2's roles is the "progressive bat-channel" ... cool!
What do we mean by this? I think of the bat-channel as an emergency communication channel and in particular a way of calling for help, so one interpretation is as a way of mobilizing progressives when action is needed. Of course there are many other possible interpretations as well. Your thoughts? And once we decide what it means, how do we start putting it into practice? What does a call on the batchannel look like? How do we make it easy for people to see when a call's gone out? In what situations should people be using the batchannel? etc. etc. Please discuss! jon PS: we'll be discussing this at tonight's tweeting -- http://p2pt0.wetpaint.com/page/May+14+tweeting

#p2 has been involved in several online activism projects: "Ask the president", #rword, #dayofsilence, "why do *you* pay your taxes?", and #fairpay ... thus far, though, these are the execptions. Most of the time, the huge majority of traffic on the tag is discussion, forwarding links, and cross-posting to conservatie hashtags. It's all good stuff ... but ...
How do we get more of an action focus? jon PS: we'll be discussing this in general at the May 14 tweeting, as well as specificaly as it relates to EFCA -- http://p2pt0.wetpaint.com/page/May+14+tweeting

the idea seems a natural follow-on to the discussions of sexism and other issues we've had on Twitter and in our conference call: work together on a #fem2 Twittercast and #p2 Tweeting both to explore these issues in more detail and to start getting progressive guys to step forward more.
I see at least three potential goals for collaboration here: 1) improve awareness of gender-and-power issues and intersectional issues in online communication 2) get male progressives to start putting their muscle behind a couple of causes that are usually described as "women's issues", one chosen from a feminist perspective (#fairpay perhaps?) and one explicitly from a woman of color perspective. 3) more and deeper connections between people in the different communities, and more good information and conversation on all three hashtags GloPan of #fem2 suggested that their Sunday Twittercast on Father's Day could be a good time to kick this off. Thoughts about the overall idea, goals, format, specific topics, anything else? Please discuss! jon PS: there's also a more general discussion of diversity on #p2 at http://p2pt0.wetpaint.com/thread/2832185/

There was a lot of discussion of diversity on #p2 during the May 14 tweeting -- see the "Sexism on #p2" section of the log at http://p2pt0.wetpaint.com/page/May+14+log ... here's the summary:
1) we should continue to confront sexism -- and encourage guys to do their part 2) we'll work with #fem2 on an upcoming Twittercast to help with education 3) potentially introduce a hashtag #sexistmuch to highlight uses 4) perhaps some description of guidelines (bearing in mind the open nature of hashtags) Let's use this thread to continue the discussions. jon

as well as the hashtag and the wiki, #p2's technology base also includes tweetleft.com (developed by Chris Meserole after a discussion in our first Twitter chat). progressives are also using Twibes, where "progressive twitter users" is the biggest political twibe. can we work with pxfriday's "progressive weekly status" and community-building mechanisms like #women2follow and #samesexsunday? are there opportunities for shared development?
please discuss! jon

| Dinkyshop | African American Women are 0.0023% of All US Architects | Diversity online | 1 | May 14 2009, 6:03 PM EDT by JonPincus | ||||

African Americans are about 1.6% of all US Licensed Architects. That number hasn't much improved in 16 years. In 1992, AAs were about 1.2% of all US Architects. Non female and non-AA architects over at the Architecture Record Magazine website forum seem to think meritocracy is gender, culture, race neutral.
Check out the thread from Architectural Record Magazine , then look at the statistics for African American Architects in the USA. There are about 101k licensed architects in the USA, according to ncarb.org, the organization that regulates architectural licensure in the USA. About 0.0023% of all architects in the USA are African American women. If that isn't invisible, I don't know what is. The idea of relinquishing the design & planning of the built environment to people who know substantially less about your gender, culture and life, challenges, is a recipe for chaos (if not extinction), in my opinion. Community, house/home is central to each culture, family, tribe. We already know that poor planning and bad design can create social climates that are not conducive to community, healthy families. Many of the posts on the AR site say AA women aren't achieving in architecture because (by implication) they must not merit advancement, must not be talented. Really? Please look at the article on the Architectural Record site and comment here. (if I posted this in the wrong area, just move it.. or let me know, ok?)

I know there is a lot to cover in the May 14 agenda and maybe this could wait for a different Tweeting, but I think it's absolutely essential to organize a time where I can work to connect national student organizational leaders with #p2. We definitely should have serious outreach to these leaders if we really want to have a Join the Impact style campaign for anything (and maybe that is a ways away...it certainly is a lofty goal), but I would want to be extremely strategic about how we plan this and would do everything in my power to ensure it's worth everyone's time and then some!
In particular I would not want to make a hard sell to these very busy professionals (who have varying experience with social media) unless we will be able to have an extremely substantive discussion where we can foster new relationship and make tangible progress. It's perfectly fine if this upcoming Tweeting is not the time for it, but I wanted to register my hope again that we will soon plan for a time when we can look at the severe divide between younger and older activists and decipher how #p2 can help bridge this gap!

| Hwaisbren | How Can We Foster More Conversation? | Discussion Forum | 6 | May 9 2009, 4:57 PM EDT by Hwaisbren | ||||
|
Thread started: May 6 2009, 12:33 PM EDT

Anyone have any ideas how we can foster more group discussions on Twitter? The Tweeting was really a great experience and I can't wait for more of them, but day to day #p2 should be a place where progressives can engage the public sphere comfortable in a diversified and empowering environment. Right now we can do this, but it's only to an extent.
Communication on #p2 (and Twitter for this most part) is far too often only one way---RT'ing or commenting on someone's Tweet or sending your own out into the ether. If you have a lot of followers or a number of motivated followers, others will spread your work and engage you in discussion. Yet far too often the desired discussion is not attained, and Tweets become a more like registering a story, opinion, or activity than a mean to have the sort of discussions our founding fathers dreamed of. #p2 should become a platform to engage in precisely this sort of conversation, whether it is constrained to #p2 or not (such as linking to blog posts where discussion will continue in the comments sections). Our community needs to do more to encourage progressives to Tweet, but more importantly, enter and engage the public sphere. As phenomenal a place as #p2 is already I don't think we are yet doing this nearly enough! This is why I ask what else we can do to foster more conversation? No matter how much we have right now, it's not enough, if only for the fact that there can never be enough if we truly want to be the "progressive batchannel" :) ---Harry
